Sun safety at home or on holiday
Sunscreens should not just be applied on holiday. Damage can happen from walking around the shopping centre, sitting in the pub garden or playing in the garden at home for example. The fragile condition of the ozone layer means that as little as 15 minutes exposure can lead to burning.
Sun safety at school
Children with fair skin, lots of moles and a history in the family of skin cancer should not be the only ones warned of the dangers. Adults too must be careful not to burn, as over exposure to the sun can lead to premature ageing of the skin. Nobody wants to look older than they really are.
I remember sitting down with my children warning them of the damage
that the sun can do to them if they don’t cover up with sunscreen
and protective clothing. ‘I don’t want to wear a silly
hat in front of my friends’ my daughter said. ‘You’re
going to feel more than silly if in later life you are diagnosed
with a melanoma’, what’s a melanoma she replied.
Fortunately my advice seemed to sink in, rather like the Proderm sunscreen they both regularly use now without me having to remind them.

Sun Kiddy also
has some advice for parents too. Ask yourself how aware is your
school of the importance of sun safety? We have some questions we
think you should ask the principal teacher at perhaps the next open
day:
 |
How long do pupils currently spend outdoors in the middle of the day. |
 |
What sort of shade is available. |
 |
Is sunscreen encouraged and applied to infants (no less than factor 30 is advisable) |
 |
Is sun safety part of the key stage curriculum. |
 |
Are children encouraged to wear hats and wrap around sunglasses at playtime or on school trips. |
